The iconic lead singer of The Jam and The Style Council had been dropped by his record label in 1990, but his career revived soon after forging close links with notorious Britpop bands Oasis and Blur.

BBC Radio 4 presenter Kirsty Young, on today's Desert Island Discs, asked Weller, 49, if he had tried the rock 'n' roll lifestyle with "drink and drugs". He said: "Yeah, it was great. And I enjoyed every single moment.

"I don't know if it was a midlife crisis, but I was into my 30s by that time."

Weller's choices include Tin Soldier by the Small Faces, Don't Be A Dropout by James Brown and Arabesque No1 by composer Claude Debussy.
