Pete Doherty defends Amy over 'embarrassing' MTV performance

Pete Doherty has leapt to the defence of Amy Winehouse, insisting she does not have a drug problem and is "perfectly healthy".

Pete, who says he's on the straight and narrow after a long stint in rehab, hooked up with Amy for a quiet drink before they went to the MTV European Music Awards in Munich last night.

The pair have both battled with drug addiction, although while Pete looks to be beating his habit, Amy looked and sounded worse for wear during her MTV appearance.

Asked if he had any advice for her, the Babyshambles frontman said: "I wouldn't give her any. She's fine. It's all bollocks. People should leave her alone.

"I went for a drink with her earlier today and she's totally fine. Perfectly healthy and happy.

"People are saying she's out of control, but she's not. She's a sensible girl and she knows what she's doing. She ain't doing nothing wrong."

Celebration: Amy hugged husband Blake Fielder-Civil before accepting her award

She was booed by the crowd when she collected her Artists' Choice award after her thank-you speech amounted to a mumbled "thanks".

She then slurred her way through a below-par performance of Back To Black and was helped off stage by one of her backing singers.

Winehouse is currently appealing against a fine she was given for marijuana possession when she arrested in a Norwegian hotel last month. She claims that local police made mistakes in the case.

Amy was a winner at the show with a prize voted by her peers and Pete showed his latest stint in rehab has not diminished his musical edge as he put in a winning performance.

The Rehab singer was a last-minute addition to the bill and represented a coup for the organisers - in September she cancelled an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas while she received treatment for her drug problems.

The last few months have seen her in hospital with a drug-induced seizure, in a rehab clinic and involved in several public bust-ups with husband Blake.

The 24-year-old star was nominated in three other categories - Best UK & Ireland Act, Album of the Year for Back To Black and Most Addictive Track for Rehab - but failed to win.

A well-behaved Doherty and his band Babyshambles performed their latest song, Delivery, at the ceremony in Munich's Olympiahalle.

Before the show, he showed off his anti-heroin implant and claimed that he was now a reformed character.

"I've been trying to stay out of trouble. I'm in hibernation," he said.

Contrary to pre-show rumours, there was no duet with Winehouse at the ceremony, but Pete explained a collaboration is on the cards.

Doherty said: "We're not doing anything tonight but we will be doing something in the future."

The star appeared to be on his best behaviour after a judge handed him a suspended jail sentence on Monday for a string of drug and motoring offences.

Organisers had feared the worst but said after his rehearsal: "He was punctual, behaved professionally and was charming to everyone. We were pleasantly surprised."

Doherty's ex, supermodel Kate Moss, is now dating another musician, The Kills' Jamie Hince.

But he was reluctant to discuss it - asked if he minded that Moss has a new boyfriend, he replied: "I didn't know she did have."

Besides Winehouse, the only other British winners were Devon rock band Muse, who were voted Best UK & Ireland Act and Best Headliners.
