Peter Andre: 'I thought I was going to die'

Now on the slow road to recovery after being struck down by a life-threatening brain bug, a frail Peter Andre admits: "I thought I was going to die".

Following his release from East Hill hospital, in Redhill, Surrey, Andre revealed that after four days of inconclusive tests he was 'petrified' he would die.

In an interview with OK magazine the singer revealed that he feared the worst.

He told the magazine: "I'd been in hospital for four days and no one knew what was wrong with me and I was just getting worse and worse.

"I was moved to an isolation room and all they kept doing was test after test. I was petrified.

"Sometimes I didn't know what was happening or whether I was awake or asleep. I didn't know what day it was - it was like being in a nightmare."

The illness struck Andre while the couple were flying back to London after a promotional visit to the US. Worried wife Katie made an emergency call after Peter stopped eating and drinking and complained of being tired.

He was admitted to hospital where he stayed for the next two weeks.

The illness left him disorientated and drifting in and out of consciousness but the 34-year-old was more concerned for wife Katie - who is heavily pregnant with the couple's second child.

As well as coping with her husband's illness, the model was at the same time caring for disabled son Harvey, four, who was still recovering after scalding himself in a bath at the couple's home on New Year's Eve.

The couple also have a 22-month old son, Junior.

Andre told the magazine: "I was really fretting about Katie being pregnant and that she might catch it.

"I'm so glad that it was me and not Katie though, because it would have been a million times worse and even more scary."

After a two-week stay in hospital Peter is still very weak and tired and is making a slow and painstaking recovery.

He said: "I'm so weak it's horrible. I'm trying to do a little bit more each day but it's frustrating.

"Everything is exhausting - walking, having a shower, getting dressed. If I don't try to do more each day I won't get better, though."

While in hospital, Andre was subject cruel internet rumours and forced to announce he was still alive, after it was claimed he had died of the deadly illness.

Wife Katie said of the rumours: "Some people are so sick and so sad. If I find out who did that they're in big trouble.

"You have to remember his whole family read that. It really is disgusting."

Peter was full of praise for Katie, who kept a bedside vigil while he was in hospital.

"Kate has been amazing, coming to hospital every day, looking after the kids, looking after the house and still working some days.

"I always knew I was lucky in life but this has made me really appreciate my life and my family even more."

The singer, who met Katie on reality show I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here is on medication to aid his recovery and is expected to return to full health in a few months.
