The television adventurer, 35, was taken ill while filming Extreme Dreams for the BBC in Peru— and has been left withered and frail "like an old man". His potentially fatal condition has eaten a one-inch hole in his forearm.
Suffering: Fogle and his life-saving injections, circled
The presenter, who rowed the Atlantic in 2006, now risks missing out on a ski race to the South Pole planned for next month. His arm is being treated with daily injections of a metal compound at University College Hospital.
A friend said: "He is really suffering. His immune system is shot to pieces. He's fainted twice because his body cannot cope. He's normally so energetic but he looks like an old man."
Doctors will decide next week whether Fogle, who lives in London with wife Marina, 30, must be admitted to hospital for eight weeks.
