The book Richard Burton: Prince of Players, which is due out next month, is said to contain sensational details about Burton's extra-marital affairs with one of the world's sexiest women.

Written by Michael Munn, the actor's former publicist , the book reveals that Burton cheated on his wife Sybil Williams through the 1950s with Monroe and starlet Lana Turner, who was his co-star in the 1955 film The Rains of Ranchipur.

Richard Burton and Marilyn Monroe are said to have conducted a secret affair over a number of years

While Burton's fondness for women and his affairs have been previously well-documented this is the first time that he has been linked with Monroe.

According to Munn, the affair was no brief fling. It is said to have taken place throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, before Burton met Elizabeth Taylor, his future wife.

Burton's marriage to Williams finally came to an end in 1963 when he famously met Elizabeth Taylor on the set of the 1963 epic Cleopatra.

Burton, at one point the biggest name in Hollywood, died aged 58 from a brain haemorrhage in 1984 having been married five times.
