Saddam Hussein gets the 'Dynasty' treatment in new BBC2 drama

A wealthy-looking man is sat on a huge golden throne surrounded by well-dressed members of his family, who wouldn't look out of place in US soap Dynasty - but this is no ordinary man.

This is the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein as he appears in a new BBC2 drama The House of Saddam.

Starring Yigal Naor as Saddam, the series will reveal the reality of the pampered former leader's opulent lifestyle, as well as uncovering the truth of the executed tyrant's brutal reign.

The promotional still released by the programme makers looks uncannily similar to a 1996 picture of the real Saddam and his family. Even down to the Dynasty-style jacket worn by Saddam's wife Sajeda.

Even against a backdrop of war his inner circle lived lives of wealth and glamour that wouldn't have looked out of place in a glossy US drama.

The programme, a co-production with Sopranos broadcaster HBO, is part of the BBC2's winter season.

House Of Saddam covers Saddam's life from 1979 until his execution in 2006.
