Dame Shirley Bassey revealed yesterday that she was targeted by a thief while shopping in London.

The Welsh singer, who lives in Monaco, said the pickpocket bumped into her on the street, distracting her enough to lift her purse.

The incident happened last month on her return to Britain to present a music award.

"I got mugged in Knightsbridge," said the 70-year-old dame. "I was with my daughter and we got out of my car and decided to walk when someone bumped into me.

"I looked the other way and before I knew it they'd got my purse.

"It's been frightful getting my new credit cards. It's shocking. Whoever it was must have followed me."

The Diamonds Are Forever singer added: "It's awful to think that I can walk safely in my home town of Monte Carlo but not in London."
