Meanwhile on stage, newlywed Amy Winehouse performed a duet with Mick Jagger, cementing her ascent to near superstar status after topping the charts in both the UK and the US.

Winehouse, teamed up with Jagger on Ain't Too Proud To Beg, a Temptations song the Stones recorded for the 1974 album It's Only Rock'n'Roll. An unintimidated Amy made a fine double act with Mick, with different vocal styles but similar waist sizes.

After her singer performance Amy stuck to water in the VIP area of the Bacardi tent where she hung out with other guests which included Anna Friel and Ronnie Wood's daughter Leah.

Husband Blake Fielder-Civil was by Amy's side to and it seems he certainly made up for Amy's abstinence.

However, Amy steered clear of the booze but despite her reed-thin appearance suggesting food is low on the agenda, she did leave the VIP area at one stage to pick up a Caribbean feast with two bodyguards - who didn't leave her side all day

Supermodel Kate Moss might be more used to travelling first class, but she seemed happy to hitch a lift with boyfriend Pete Doherty on a motorised buggy to get around backstage.

The pair - along with friends and assorted children - zipped about at the festival, with a sheepish-looking Pete on the back... perhaps because a 28-year-old should probably be able to walk around festivals.

The loved-up pair looked the epitome of grungy festival chic - well, maybe just Kate did - as she rocked up in fashionable wide-legged jeans and a corset top.

The supermodel who recently launched her summer collection for TopShop, is working on the launch of her own perfume line. But boyfriend Pete has come under-fire as bosses are worried that he will harm sales.

A source told the Daily Star: "Pete is great for Kate's rock 'n' roll image and a brilliant icon - but he doesn't look like he smells very nice.

"When you sell a fragrance you are selling a lifestyle. Every girl wants to be Kate Moss - but nobody wants to smell like Pete's ruined flat."

Also at the festival taking full advantage of the free beer was party-girl and erstwhile actress Sienna Miller.

Sienna's mish-mash of an outfit, white baggy shirt, waistcoat, beads and shorts topped off by a straw trilby made her look like a cross between Worzel Gummidge and Kate Moss.

However, she could do worse than take a few sartorial tips from a dressed down Anna Friel who looked relaxed in skinny jeans and pumps, and an iconic Rolling Stones t-shirt.

It was the Stone's first performance at a UK festival in more than 30 years and the finale of the annual music festival and part of the group's European tour.

Their two-hour set, which featured a specially-adapted telescopic stage which came out into the audience, included the hits Satisfaction, Sympathy for the Devil, Brown Sugar and songs from their new album A Bigger Bang.

Jagger, was at his strutting best, wowing a celebrity-packed audience with his well-honed stage act. The singer, accused by ex-wife Jerry of being stingy joked: "I must say it's a bit expensive here - £2 for water and £4 for a hamburger. And to top it all the dog ate my dope."

No expense was spared as the Rolling Stones arrived at the Isle of Wight on their own privately chartered ferry for their 200-strong entourage including five Winnebago trailers and private security team.

Guitarist Keith Richards told Virgin Radio, which is covering the festival, that he was pleased to be playing to a home UK crowd.

He said: "It's kind of weird you know, for us. Coming back home is always like a bit more special. We just carry Britain with us really, our little bubble of it."

Front man Mick Jagger added that he did not get stage fright.

He said: "I never get nervous except before the first show of a major tour I get a bit anxious."

He added: "I did a bit of voice coaching a few years ago, well 35 years without any voice-coaching, you might say it was better late than never."

The Rolling Stones, whose last UK festival was Knebworth Fair in 1976, kicked off their European tour in Belgium this week with a 30-mile traffic jam of fans queueing to see them in the town of Werchter.

But the critics and 33,000 fans were wowed by the old-timers' A Bigger Bang tour which will feature 30 gigs across Europe including performances in Belgrade, Serbia, and in St Petersburg, Russia, which the band has never visited before.

The Stones' previous tour became the highest-grossing one in concert history in November 2006, netting the band over £50 million last year and putting them at the top of Forbes's annual list of music's biggest earners.

The Isle of Wight festivals at the end of the 1960s were a series of legendary events featuring Bob Dylan, The Who, Free, The Doors, Joni Mitchell, Jefferson Airplane culminating in 1970 with 600,000 hippies descending on the island to see Jimi Hendrix perform his penultimate concert.

Since re-starting the festival, world-renowned acts such as Coldplay, The Who, David Bowie, Robert Plant, Lou Reed, Foo Fighters and REM have played.

John Giddings, of festival organisers Solo, said: "We would never have attempted to restart the festival without having such a strong history, the Isle of Wight was the Woodstock of Europe.

"I saw Jimi Hendrix there, and was proud to be offered the chance to contribute to the island's musical heritage.

"It only lasted three years in the 1960s and we are on our sixth, so things are looking good."

Other acts at Seaclose Park, Newport, which have taken to the stage bathed in glorious sunshine for the entire weekend, have included Muse, Amy Winehouse, Snow Patrol, Donovan, Keane and ex-Spice Girl Melanie C and Groove Armada.
