Getting married: Gareth Gates has proposed to girlfriend Suzanne Mole
The thrilled star said: "After a great Christmas, I proposed to Suzanne on New Year's Eve and she said yes.
"We are both extremely happy and look forward to planning our wedding and life together."
The Bradford-born Gates is tipped to appear on the forthcoming series of ITV1's Dancing On Ice.
He made a musical comeback last year with album Pictures Of The Other Side.
After shooting to fame as a stammering teenager in the 2002 series of Pop Idol, when he finished runner-up to Will Young, he went on to bag four number ones and sell 3.5 million records worldwide.
His previous conquests include glamour girl Jordan, who revealed they enjoyed a three-month affair. The singer had initially denied the romance.
However, after Jordan published her autobiography were she gave intimate details of their affair, he confessed. The glamour model even bragged that she had taken the young pop star's virginity.
Gates met Suzanne, who is from Newcastle, at the Record of the Year awards in 2002, and in 2004 there were rumours they were getting married. His speech therapist was said to have been chosen as his best man.
When asked about marriage in April last year, Gareth said: "The way I have been brought up, that's what it's about for me.
"It doesn't suit everybody, but for me life is about marriage, lots of children, a massive house. If that's what my life is like, I will be happy."
The couple live together in a tree-bedroom apartment in south-west London.
