So long, Wellard... EastEnders bids sad farewell to Albert Square's beloved pooch

There are tear-jerking moments on Albert Square this week when Albert Square bids a farewell to one of its most well-loved characters...Wellard the dog.

In emotional scenes the Jackson family say their goodbyes to the popular pooch who has starred in the Square for 14 years.

Bianca Jackson runs Wellard to the vet when she finds him laying lifeless on the floor.

After being told he is dying she is desperate to save him, but eventually realises it is time for the beloved pet go to doggy heaven.

Wellard joined the cast of EastEnders in October 1994 as Robbie Jackson's canine companion played by Tervuren hunting dog Zenna.

Since then he has had a number of different owners on the Square. Gus Smith took in the pup when Robbie left  Walford in 2003.

He was then left behind when Gus went on tour in May this year and was sold to Vinnie before ending up at Pat's with the Jacksons.

The canine character is now played by Kyte, who has also starred in A Touch of Frost, 102 Dalmatians and Gladiator.

Like the other EastEnders characters Wellard has also had his fair share of intrigues and scandals over the years.

One of his key storylines involved being kidnapped by Jay Brown last year and he earned the respect of viewers around the country when he bit Ian Beale on the backside.

The cheeky mutt also became a dad when he fathered Frieda the greyhound's puppy.
