Spoiler alert: Sopranos ends on cliffhanger watched by 13m

The door has been left open for Tony Soprano to make a comeback after the final episode of the critically acclaimed series ended on a cliffhanger.

More than 13 million people tuned in to discover whether the Mafia boss, played by James Gandolfini, would be "whacked" as the series finished its eight-year run.

Details of the finale failed to leak out, helped by creator David Chase filming three different endings with the cast sworn to secrecy.

Gandolfini and other cast members attended a farewell party and special screening of the show at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
