Stella turnout for Macca's 65th birthday

After a year he must privately describe as his "annus horribilis", Sir Paul McCartney could be forgiven for letting his hair down.

The legendary ex-Beatle has been through the mill over his divorce from "Lady Mucca", Heather Mills-McCartney, and last year when he could finally sing "When I'm 64" for real, it was with little fanfare and celebration.

But there was no need for such modesty this birthday. After a critically acclaimed comeback performance at the lowkey Electric Ballroom in Camden earlier in June he was on fighting form.

So Sir Paul McCartney decided 65 was one year he would celebrate. Being a rock star, he didn't have to do things by halves, so he invited a few choice friends over to his house in St John's Wood for a bit of a bash.

Daughters Stella and Mary McCartney were first in line to say "Happy Birthday Dad". Never hiding their dislike for their father's second wife, they looked pleased as punch as they arrived to celebrate a new year ahead for him.

Stella looked like Daddy's girl in a cute flowery puff-sleeved dress complete with a big purple flower and towering satin heels.

Her demure sister brought her party hat with her, which topped off an elegant off-the-shoulder white figure-hugging dress.

Stella's pals Kate Moss and Natalie Portman, who stars in the video clip for Sir Paul's track 'Dance Tonight' added A-list glamour to the night.

Sir Paul McCartney recently told a radio station he couldn't stand "celbration of mediocrity", referring to Big Brother and the plethora of celebrities known for nothing.

So it was fitting he invited the creme of the artistic establishment to celebrate his birthday, with musician Jools Holland and photographer David Bailey top of the guestlist.

Bailey went for the dress-down option, with dodgy roll-up jeans and baseball cap, upstaged completely by his glamorous girlfriend in Spanish-style gown.

Jools, ever the sophisticate, looked ready to tinkle the ivories in a long jacket and unusual bow tie.

Also in attendance were the likes of ubiquitous party animals Elton John and David Furnish. The couple have not slowed on the social scene since tying the knot in a civil partnership and were all smiles as they arrived for Sir Paul's do.

Elton wore a designer suit with a shiny trousered twist, while debonaire David wore this season's monochrome trend with panache.

Mackenzie Crook and his partner were also on the bill for the night. The Pirates of the Carribean and The Office star wore top hat and tails, ready to whisk any Ginger Rogers off their feet no doubt.
