Strictly Beatrice, the royal who nearly went dancing ...

Princess Beatrice was approached to join those competing in BBC's Strictly Come Dancing

With all the backstage sniping, television's Strictly Come Dancing has done a pretty good job of keeping us all interested.

Yet I can reveal the show very nearly became the most fascinating TV event of the year - with a young Royal taking a starring role.

Princess Beatrice was approached to join those competing in the series and came close to accepting before ultimately deciding to pursue her gap-year plans.

"Beatrice is a huge fan of Strictly and was offered the opportunity to go on the show this year," says a friend.

"She was desperate to do it but decided to go ahead with her gap year as she plans to start university next year and wanted some time out before studying again.

"She is now in Argentina with two girlfriends - had she done the show, it would have clashed with her travelling plans."

But Beatrice, 19, who is eager to set up her own fashion line, has been told by the BBC that she is welcome to appear on the show next year.

"They said she can take part any time she wants," adds my source.

"There is an open offer on the table. The producers are aware what a ratings hit it would be if they were to secure a Royal on the programme."

According to friends, Beatrice, who has been spotted on the dancefloors of London clubs Boujis and Amika, is a natural dancer.

"She's got great rhythm and is always dancing when she's out. She would be perfect as she's a great sport," said a friend.

Despite the BBC denying an approach, a spokesperson for the Princess confirmed an offer had been made and that Bea had turned it down.

Her mother, the Duchess of York, was approached last year to appear on the U.S. version, Dancing With Stars, but said she was too busy.

Beatrice could have been dancing against this year's favourites Kelly Brook and Brendan Cole
