The Scottish singing sensation had planned to perform the track with a 100-piece children's choir but songwriter Lou Reed pulled the plug at the last minute because he didn't want Susan covering his track.
Susan was left with just two hours to rehearse a new song but decided it wasn't enough time and told organisers she wouldn't be taking to the stage.
A source told the New York Post newspaper: "Lou didn't want Susan to perform his song - he's not a Susan fan. It's a big deal to change a song at the last minute. Susan was really upset. She was in tears and was forced to pull out of the show, and decided to come back to the UK."
Representatives for America's Got Talent, Lou or Susan are yet to comment on the matter.
Meanwhile, the Wild Horses hitmaker has moved house.
The 49-year-old star - who rose to fame on UK TV talent show Britain's Got Talent - has moved out of her council house and into a five-bedroom £300,000 home in West Lothian.
