Taylor Swift hits shops before becoming musical royalty

Taylor Swift showed she is like any other teenage girl as she shopped with her mother in London — hours before being crowned the new queen of pop.

The 19-year-old singer won five prizes at the American Music Awards yesterday, including artist of the year.

Portobello belle: Taylor Swift out shopping just hours before the ceremony

She made an acceptance speech via satellite link from the Wembley Arena, where she will tonight perform a concert.

But hours earlier she had been browsing in Portobello Road with her friends and mother, despite crowds of fans surrounding her to take pictures. After looking at clothes and necklaces at a jewellery stall, she left with three bagfuls of goodies.

She won favourite female artist in the pop/rock and country categories, and favourite adult-contemporary artist. Her album Fearless, the best-selling release in America this year, was named favourite country album.

Swift, who went head-to-head in the artist of the year category with the late Michael Jackson, said in her acceptance speech: "Music has never been ultimately about competition."

She then added it was an "unimaginable honour" to be cited in the same category as Jackson, who ended up with four awards.

Diva No2: Lady GaGa wore a typically outlandish costume

Performers at the ceremony in Los Angeles included Shakira, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga in a trademark bizarre costume.

Former X Factor winner Leona Lewis also attended, wearing a black Vivienne Westwood dress.
