The cruellest of timing for cad Hewitt’s final betrayal of Diana

Fifteen years since former Army officer James Hewitt broke his silence about his illicit affair with Princess Diana and on the eve of the tenth anniversary of the Princess's death, the 49-year-old love rat has directed a film about his relationship with her.

In the Channel 4 docu-drama called My Way, Hewitt attempts to convince viewers that he is not the cad he has been branded.

The programme apparently stars Hewitt as himself in the final scene, but largely sees him try his hand as a director.

According to sources close to Hewitt, he claims in the film that he and Diana had a reconciliation just seven months before her death.

"James has always said he and Diana did actually speak again after many months of silence," a friend said last night.

"James talks about this in the film and says that Diana called him, and went to see him.

"There's one clip in which James reveals that in their final conversation Diana told him she was going to shock the world and 'marry a big fat black man'."

The friend added: "It's pretty gripping stuff and it makes great television.

"James also talks about how he seriously thought about driving to France and committing suicide when he became the most hated man in the country."

The couple's early romance – Hewitt met Diana in 1986 when he was a riding instructor to Princes William and Harry – is portrayed by professional actors.

"James saw the film as his chance to tell his own story," added the friend.

"He says he's known for being a bastard and wanted to be able to show people what really happened.

"He was very hands-on with the filming and had a professional film crew at his disposal. He oversaw every scene.

"He directed the actors playing out the most important moments of his and Diana's courtship.

"There's a rather racy bedroom scene which is meant to be the very first time he stayed at Kensington Palace with her."
