TV chiefs snub Paris over $1m fee for talk

TV executives have turned down demands for a $1million fee for Paris Hilton's first interview after she is released from jail.

The 26-year-old hotel heiress, who will be freed on Tuesday, had been lined up to appear on Today, the top-rating breakfast show in America, according to reports.

But a spokeswoman for the TV network NBC said: "We have not and will not pay for an interview."

Paid interviews are taboo in the US but "licensing" deals for the rights to personal material such as video footage have become more common.

Sources at NBC and its rival ABC said Hilton's representatives initially had demanded payment in return for an interview.

But Michael Sitrick, a friend of the Hilton family, said: "Contrary to media reports, Paris is not being paid for any television interview. Nor is she being paid for any collateral, including video and photographs."

Hilton was sentenced to 45 days for flouting a drink-driving ban. She was originally released just 72 hours after being sentenced amid concerns for her health by Sheriff Lee Baca, who placed her under house arrest.

Then sentencing judge Michael Sauer ordered her back to court the next day and returned the weeping blonde to jail. Her sentence was reduced to 23 days for good behaviour.
