Twiggy celebrates 60th with National Portrait Gallery show

Twiggy, the original supermodel, is to celebrate her 60th birthday with a display of her life in photographs.

Elegance: Twiggy by Barry Lategan in 1966 - the picture which made her career

The gamine girl, who was named the face of 1966, has been captured on camera so many times that the National Portrait Gallery exhibition will be a roll-call of leading photographers.

It will include the pictures by Barry Lategan with her distinctive cropped hair which made her name in 1966, and images by Cecil Beaton, John Swannell, Terry O'Neill and both the late Linda McCartney and her daughter, Mary.

There are also shots taken in 2000 by Bryan Adams and last year by Solve Sundsbo.

Announcing the display and a book called Twiggy: A Life in Photographs, she said: "Over my career, I've had the privilege of working with many great photographers. I'm very excited to see so many of these portraits coming together at the National Portrait Gallery.

"It's really interesting to see how fashion photography and portraiture have evolved throughout my career."

Twiggy was the nickname for Lesley Hornby, who grew up in Neasden and won her first modelling contract aged 16.

She went on to have a career in theatre and film, including the 1971 musical The Boy Friend.

Lategan said: "Those pictures are known throughout the world and I'm proud to have been associated with her success. I am just amazed that she has maintained her elegance and poise."

Twiggy: A Life in Photographs is at the National Portrait gallery from 19 September to 24 March. Entry is free.
