Twitter users are frozen out in clamour over X Factor Frankie

Twitter was almost brought to a halt as hundreds of thousands logged on to discover the fate of ousted X Factor contestant Frankie Cocozza.

Tweets were taking five times longer than the usual three seconds to update when news broke that the Brighton singer, 18, had been axed after allegedly confessing to taking cocaine.

A third of Twitter users were unable to access the site in the scramble yesterday, according to internet experts Keynote Systems. X Factor boss Simon Cowell today said Cocozza had "blown a wonderful opportunity" and had "no one to blame but himself".

Cocozza has apologised for having to leave, saying his life had "gone out of control". His father, also called Frank, from Beckenham, said: "I'm heartbroken for him. Neither of us saw this coming." The X Factor was expected to announce today which act, if any, will return to replace Cocozza.

Brighton music charity Rhythmix claims Simon Cowell's firm is trying to register its name as a trademark to use it for X Factor girl band Little Mix, originally also called Rhythmix. The firm, Simco, declined to comment.
