Underdog Kate's delight as viewers save her AGAIN - and kick out Penny Lancaster

To the consternation of the judges, Kate Garraway proved once again last night that you can't keep a bad dancer down.

For the second week in a row, the experts gave her the worst marks of all the competitors in BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing.

And for the second week in a row, when it came to the public vote she was spared the axe.

Kate pouts after the judges criticise her performance once again

Instead it was Rod Stewart's 36-year-old wife Penny Lancaster who was given her marching orders after the vote left her involved in a dance-off with EastEnder Matt Di Angelo, 17.

One of the judges, Craig Revel Horwood, said it was "criminal" that they had ended up in the bottom two.

Miss Garraway, 39, a presenter on GMTV, had been given only 18 points out of a possible 40 for her "stompy" salsa performance on Saturday night.

But once again the GMTV host has defied the odds, and watched from the sidelines as another more accomplished dancer was voted off the competition.

As devastated Penny Lancaster Stewart was given her marching orders, she said she was "honoured" to have been part of the show. At least husband Rod will be pleased after complaining he had hardly seen his wife for weeks.

Penny Lancaster burst into tears after she was voted off the show

Last week the breakfast presenter gave a half-decent dance, but this week judge Bruno Tonioli said: "The nightmare is back", adding "you sucked the life out of the salsa". Judge Arlene Phillips described it as being "sexy as a coconut."

And the judges also panned her stumbling performance in the group jitterbug dance, although Bruno said "you keep getting knocked down but you keep getting up!"

Miss Garraway, 39, was spared even taking part in the dance-off as Eastender's Matt Di Angelo, 17, was forced to battle it out with the wife of Rod Stewart. Di Angelo and his partner had scored 29 points from judges while Lancaster Stewart was given 25 for her salsa.

Judges were also apparently baffled by the public's voting again. Craig Revel Horwood claimed it was "absolutely criminal" that Lancaster Stewart and Di Angelo were in the bottom two. Judge Len Goodman added: "Neither of you two couples deserved to be in the bottom two."

This comes after presenter Bruce Forsyth had a go at the audience when Gabby Logan was recently knocked out of the show.

He had claimed: "Next week remember this is a dance contest", while judge Bruno Tonioli had branded Logan's departure a "ridiculous fiasco".

Model and photographer Lancaster Stewart, 36, was the sixth dancer to be voted off the show.

While there was surprise at her departure judges had been critical of her routine with partner Ian Waite.

Len was disappointed with Penny's salsa: 'For me, it was just a bit hectic' he said

Arlene Phillips said her salsa had been like "a canary and a crow flying in from Stansted not Cuba!", while Bruno Tonioli said it was "bordering on the hysterical".

The success of Garraway, who is partnered by Anton Du Beke, is becoming something of a phenomenon given her obvious limitations as a dancer.

It is also embarrassing for the BBC who changed the rules this year to make harder for good dancers to be kicked of the show, by giving the judges more power.

This time judges have the casting vote on the bottom two chosen by the public. But the public has repeatedly put better dancers in the bottom two.

While judges have appeared been bemused by Miss Garraway's success on the show, there is no doubt fellow contestants have become annoyed at her popularity.

Her initial survival on the show was put down to a sympathy vote for the fact that she suffered a foot injury at the beginning of the series.

Logan complained she had been voted off in part because 'my journey' was not interesting enough and complained she had been hampered because she did not have a PR machine or a publicist behind her. She also suggested Garraway had benefitted from having a fan base on her show.

Lancaster-Stewart was involved in the dance off with Gabby Logan a few weeks ago despite judges admitting that the pair were two of the best dancers.

The BBC received lots of complaints over 34-year-old Logan's departure claiming it had been unfair she had been knocked out.
