We predict a riot as Kaisers freeze out the Arctics...

The NME Awards have been thrown into chaos after the Kaiser Chiefs sparked a war of words with the Arctic Monkeys, telling them to shut up and write better songs or go back to stacking shelves in supermarkets.

Organisers of Thursday's ceremony, terrified it will all kick off on the night, are taking special measures, including heightened security, to keep the bands apart.

Kaiser Chiefs' keyboardist Nick "Peanut" Baines lashed out, claiming they're an easy target, after Arctics frontman Alex Turner said if his band end up like the Kaisers they'll quit.

Nick said: "We're an easy target because nobody ever slags off a small band. You realise it's all one big game, but unfortunately the bands that slag us off are taking it far too seriously. It'd be better if they were writing better songs than us, but they're not, so they can shut up."

The Kaisers' new album Yours Truly, Angry Mob hit the shops yesterday and their single Ruby went straight in at No1 on Sunday. The Leeds band will perform at the NME Awards in Hammersmith Palais on Thursday along with The Killers, Kasabian and Primal-Scream.

A source told Daily Mail sister paper London Lite: "The Arctic Monkeys don't have much respect for the Kaiser Chiefs and now the Kaisers have added fuel to the fire by slagging them off. Anything could happen on Thursday, which is slightly thrilling and slightly nerve-wracking for the organisers.

"The Arctics aren't known for their good behaviour. Last year they were kicking their awards around the dancefloor and shouting at anybody who got in their way. So special measures are being taken to try to keep them away from the Kaiser Chiefs.

"It would be great to have a bit of rock'n' roll rivalry on the night, but we don't want any punches thrown or for it to get out of control. The last thing we need is for someone to end up with a broken nose or in hospital."

A not-so-terrified Nick had a final dig at the Monkeys, telling magazine Gigwise: "It's not as if I'm hurt or lying awake at night or anything. We'll get on with what we're doing and you get back to packing shelves in supermarkets again."

It's gearing up to be a great night...
