Who wants to be Chris Tarrant's new blonde?

He is understood to have been seeing Jane Bird for the past six weeks. And the shapely blonde bears more than a passing resemblance to his ex-wife Ingrid in her younger days.

The couple looked a picture of summer loving as they embraced in the street on the island of Capri.

But a spokesman for the 60-year-old Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? presenter last night insisted that his companion was simply a friend, who "happens to be female".

However, they seemed more than just friends as they enjoyed the ambience of the beautiful Italian tourist haven.

They wrapped their arms around each other in the shade of a restaurant awning, and could not resist a more tender embrace as other holidaymakers walked nearby.

"They looked extremely close, hugging and kissing and looking very happy," said an onlooker.

"They sat and had lunch and strolled hand-in-hand. I was surprised by how much she looks like Ingrid."

Sadly, Tarrant's choice of wardrobe rather let him down. He fell into the trap of so many British men abroad, teaming white trainers and socks with a pair of cut-off sports trousers designed for someone perhaps just a little younger.

His white T-shirt was at least crisp, but did nothing to flatter his girth. And he might just have got away with that straw hat if he hadn't strapped it under a distinctly jowly chin.

Then, when a sun-kissed Tarrant sat down at a cafe to enjoy a cool glass of beer he started chatting on his mobile, while his partner read up on some local information.

Miss Bird at least showed a little more style. She wore a geometric print maxidress with fashionable cork-wedged shoes. The outfit was set off with a beaded necklace, chunky bangle, sequinned bag and oversized designer sunglasses.

Tarrant's spokesman refused to discuss the presenter's companion last night, saying: "She is totally unrelated to TV, she does not work with him. Chris is on holiday in Italy with a friend, having a private holiday.

"I am making no further comment. He is trying to have a private life. Chris has a lot of friends and he is on holiday with a friend who happens to be female."

Tarrant and Ingrid, 52, split last year after he admitted an affair with Fiona McKechnie, a 50-year-old deputy head.

Over recent months, the marriage breakdown has descended into a vicious war of words and public wrangling. First there is the issue of the star's estimated £34million fortune, of which Ingrid is line to receive a sizeable cut.

There has been mutual sniping, with the most embarrassing sally from Ingrid after a "friend" of Tarrant apparently suggested she had banned sex in the marriage.

She hit back, claiming he was "clumsy and naive in bed" and had relied on Viagra for four years.

She claimed the keen angler had problems with personal hygiene and often went to bed smelling of fish and with dried fish blood of his hands.
