Will the real Wayne Rooney please stand up? Lookalike causes a frenzy in TV ad

Hordes of Manchester United fans gathered in a Manchester suburb yesterday in an attempt to get a glimpse of their hero Wayne Rooney.

One lone man dressed in the footballer's Number 10 red shirt caused a stir as he arrived on set of a new TV advert as dozens of fans mistook him for the real McCoy.

Over 100 fans gathered outside The Shamrock Pub in Ancoats to be extras in a new EA Games advertisement, which was set to star Rooney.

The fans turned up dressed in all their Man Utd finery after being offered the chance to be extras alongside their idol in the new ad.

The mob caused quite a scene as they marched along the street banging drums and chanting their team's anthems.

However, it soon appeared all the excitement was in vain as the fans gradually realised the 22-year-old England star was nowhere to be seen.

An armchair and games console had been set up on a balcony of the pub in anticipation of Rooney's arrival, but unfortunately for the crowd, it stood empty all day.

Meanwhile, Rooney has been named as the surprise new face of Hovis bread.

The newlywed sports star, who married his childhood sweetheart Coleen McLoughlin in Italy in June, had been paid a reported £150,000 to star in commercials for the popular loaf.
