£7m Heinze heading for Real

Gabriel Heinze is on the brink of a £7million move to Real Madrid as Manchester United start to balance the Old Trafford books following Sir Alex Ferguson's dazzling £50m move last week.

United chief executive David Gill admitted yesterday that players would have to leave in the wake of the arrival of star trio Nani, Anderson and England midfielder Owen Hargreaves.

Cash-conscious United will even make a small profit on Argentina left back Heinze, who was signed for £6.9m from Paris Saint-Germain three years ago.

Heinze was involved in a tug-ofwar between bitter rivals Real and Barcelona, but the 29-year-old has told Argentina team-mates he is about to leave United for the Bernabeu.

Heinze is likely to be followed out of the door by winger Keiron Richardson and striker Alan Smith.

Ferguson remains in the hunt for a potent goalscorer, with doubts lingering over Louis Saha.

Fernando Torres heads the list, despite the £20m price tag imposed by Atletico Madrid.

Gill said: "We've looked at it and if something comes along we'll see what happens. If anything does happen it will be in the striker department.

"We're not desperate but if any top player came along and Alex and the team felt they would strengthen the side then we would move for them.

"There will be changes because we have a large squad and there should be some people leaving."
