90 million switch on to the Joe show

Peter Manfredo Jr may not be the headline name that he wanted to face, but Joe Calzaghe knows fighting a reality TV star tomorrow night will give him the audience he wants.

American broadcasting giants HBO are screening the Millennium Stadium fight. The WBO super middleweight champion sees it as a stepping stone to the high-profile fights he craves.

Getting respect: Joe Calzaghe is looking forward to taking on Peter Manfredo in front of his own crowd

There's hype to go with the fight because of Manfredo's celebrity status from boxing reality TV show The Contender.

With a potential free-to-air U.S. audience of 90 million, Calzaghe said: "After nine years as champion, finally this is where I've wanted to be – fighting on a big stage to the biggest audience I've ever had.

"It's been frustrating at times not getting some of the names I wanted but this a massive opportunity. I'm 35 but I've still got so many goals."

He is 33/1 on to beat his opponent. But Manfredo has the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard giving advice on how to cause an upset in front of 35,000 spectators in Cardiff.

Manfredo said: "All the talk of the reality show doesn't bother me.

"If it wasn't for the show, the fight wouldn't have happened but I'm not here to be the opponent. I'm here to become the champion.

"I've done my homework and I've got supreme confidence. I don't care if he's the best or what he's done.

"I'm not scared of anybody. Joe Calzaghe is a human being and he can be beat."

But Calzaghe warned: "This isn't TV, this is reality and I am ready to defend my title and create history. If you can't get up to perform in front of 35,000 of your own fans then you're not alive."

Meanwhile, Amir Khan has been offered the chance to fight fellow unbeaten British lightweight John Murray in Las Vegas on May 5.

Murray, 22, will box on the undercard of the fight between Americans Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather at the MGM Grand Casino. He has offered Khan, who faces Doncaster's Steffy Bull at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff tomorrow, the chance to back up his claims that he is ready to face anyone in Britain.

He said: "He says he's ready to fight anyone in Britain — well, he needs to fight me now to prove he is the best domestically.

"He knows of me and has seen me fight but he doesn't say he wants to fight me because he knows I'm the best out of everyone coming through."
