£9.5m Hutton can take England by storm: Smith
30 January 2008
Rangers manager Walter Smith last night backed Alan Hutton to take the English Premier League by storm after agreeing a Scottish record-breaking £9.5million move to Tottenham Hotspur.
The 23-year-old international defender spent last night finalising his switch to White Hart Lane after the English giants returned with a third offer which both Rangers and Hutton could not refuse.
The right back will earn £33,000-per week and will also pocket a £1m golden goodbye after finally agreeing to the move south.
Rangers expect the fee for Hutton to exceed both the £8.5m club record received from Arsenal for Giovanni van Bronckhorst in 2001 and the record £9m Sunderland shelled out for Scotland keeper Craig Gordon.
As Hutton departs, one player on his way back to Murray Park is controversial striker Daniel Cousin, after his £3m move to Fulham was blocked by FIFA. And he could be joined by out-of-favour West Ham defender Christian Dailly, who was in talks with Rangers last night about a loan deal until the end of the season.
Hutton is expected to make his Spurs debut against Manchester United on Saturday and, despite the hefty fee involved, Smith insists the defender will prove a smash hit for Juande Ramos' Spurs.
The Rangers boss said: "I am extremely confident Alan will do well at Tottenham. He has shown with his performances for Rangers and Scotland how well he can play. It's a terrific buy for Tottenham.
"His level of performance has been excellent and he now has the confidence to go along with that.
"Everybody at the club, from the chairman down, is disappointed from a football perspective that he is leaving. But we all know the reality of the situation is that it's an offer we couldn't turn down.
"Alan seemed to agonise over the move but that's something you would need to ask Alan about. He was happy to stay at Rangers as he was enjoying his football.
"But he appreciates the financial aspect meant it was something he had to consider seriously. That is why it has taken him so long to make up his mind. He wanted to make sure it was the right move at the right time for him."
Smith had been expected to reinvest a portion of the Hutton millions in a new striker and had been linked with £3.5m-rated Luke Moore of Aston Villa, but the shock return of Cousin throws the manager's plans into doubt.
The Gabon international played 20 minutes for Lens at the start of the season before signing for the Ibrox club in a £1m deal - and has fallen foul of FIFA's rules banning players from turning out for three clubs in the same season.
Cousin's comeback should spell the end of Rangers' interest in Burnley forward Kyle Lafferty, with Smith now expected to see out the season with his current striking options.
Smith is keen to bring in a new left back before the window shuts at midnight tomorrow and a reserve goalkeeper is also a priority, with Derby County No2 Lewis Price the latest name to be linked with a switch to Ibrox.
