A night in the life of a semi-final

FLAP OF THE GAME: DIDA

Do Brazilians produce great goalkeepers? Er, Dida came off the treatment table and found himself exposed by a high corner that led to Ronaldo's header. He came, he missed and then, after the ball bounced off his shoulder, he flapped. Goal to United.

GOAL OF THE GAME: KAKA

Do Brazilians produce great midfielders? In Ronaldo's back yard, Kaka scored his eighth of the season in the Champions League. A driving, aggressive power surge into the box. Marvellous acceleration, wonderful finish. What a player.

OOPS OF THE GAME: HEINZE/EVRA

When Kaka is around, the last thing you need is Keystone Kops defending. But when Kaka chased a long ball, against three defenders, he shrugged off Fletcher and then watched as Evra took out Heinze. Kaka slipped home goal No 9 in the Champions League this season.

MISS OF THE GAME: CARRICK

Cool and composed against Roma, he was careless with a chance that arrived soon after half-time. A drifting corner, the Italians caught ball watching at the near post and Carrick arrived alone... and missed with a clumsy shot off the inside of his right boot. Had a poor game.

GENIUS OF THE GAME: SCHOLES

You can have your Italians and your Brazilians, but the most sublime touch of the match was from Paul Scholes. With Gattuso off injured, he moved into the vacated space and lifted a class pass over the top for Rooney to arrive and make it 2-2.
