Rodgers, who spent three seasons as understudy to Favre before claiming the starting role in 2008, completed 24 of 39 passes for 304 yards to lead the Packers to their fourth Super Bowl win in the early hours of this morning.
"It's a dream come true," said Rodgers. "It's what I dreamt about as a little kid watching Joe Montana and Steve Young [of the 49ers]."
Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger threw two costly interceptions and said: "I don't put blame on anybody but myself. I feel like I let the city of Pittsburgh down, the fans, my coaches and my team-mates."
Rodgers opened the scoring with a 29-yard pass to Jordy Nelson before Nick Collins ran back Roethlisberger's first interception to leave the Steelers down 14-0.
Shaun Suisham's field goal put Pittsburgh on the scoreboard in the second period but their success was shortlived as Greg Jennings's 21-yard catch extended the Packers' lead to 21-3. Hines Ward scored the Steelers' first touchdown before
half-time and Rashard Mendenhall crossed the line after the break to make it 21-17.
Jennings's second touchdown made it 28-17 but in the fourth quarter Mike Wallace's ninth catch and a two-point conversion by Antwaan Randle El made it a three-point game until Mason Crosby sealed victory with a 23-yard field goal.
