After Robinson's howler, James says he's the man. Surely he can't be any worse... can he?

David James last night demanded the chance to take over from Paul Robinson as England's goalkeeper for next month's crucial Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia.

England coach Steve McClaren has already hinted that Robinson faces the axe after his costly mistake for the equaliser in the 2-1 defeat by Germany at Wembley on Wednesday.

James, 37, who has been recalled to the squad for the first time since the 2006 World Cup, has been one of the Premier League's most consistent goalkeepers in the past year.

The Portsmouth No 1, who lost his place to Robinson after gifting Austria two goals in a World Cup qualifier in 2004, said: "I don't want to just to warm the bench. England have some very good young goalkeepers so it wouldn't be in their interest to bring me in to sit on the bench.

"If the opportunity arises, I'm up for it. Everyone wants to play so between now and the next squad, I'll be trying to do what I can to jog the manager's mind and hopefully get a shout.

"I'd rather it happens because I am doing well and not just because someone else is not doing so well."

McClaren said: "I want people to be pushed to another level in every position and that's why we brought David James back. We've also got Scott Carson, who is at Aston Villa and will play regularly, so there's competition for places.

"We want that in every position, which we haven't got. We've got two weeks now to reflect on everything. At this level they have to be mentally tough and mentally strong, and recover from mistakes and disappointments."

Robinson is also under fire from his club and is facing a fine of a week's wages after slamming the Tottenham board.

Speaking after the Wembley defeat, Robinson, 27, branded the board's decision to court Sevilla coach Juande Ramos as "ridiculous" and criticised them for threatening to unseat manager Martin Jol so early in the season.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was furious when he read what he regards as disrespectful comments yesterday and directors will decide whether to sanction the player when they meet in Manchester ahead of Sunday's game at Old Trafford.

The Spurs chairman also called in Dimitar Berbatov and his agent as Manchester United stepped up their interest in the striker.

Levy does not want to sell Berbatov, whose groin injury is taking longer to heal than expected. Agent Emil Dantchev said: "It was a normal meeting with Daniel Levy and we have discussed the future.

"Dimitar is one of the players who can help the team, but he is a professional and this situation is not a children's joke. He has a contract with Tottenham and he recognises that without Martin Jol he would not be at the club."
