Age goes against Dwain as Castleford decide not to offer disgraced sprinter Chambers a contract

Shamed athlete Dwain Chambers still hopes to make a career for himself in rugby league despite being rejected by Super League club Castleford Tigers yesterday.

'I am in discussions with other clubs,' said his agent Ron Hill after Castleford decided not to offer the 30-year-old sprinter more time to prove himself.

Stopped in his tracks: Castleford have decided not to offer Dwain Chambers a rugby league contract

No contract: Dwain Chambers

'But it has got to be right for him and it has got to be full-time. Dwain needs six months in the reserve grade and a full pre-season to learn the game.'

Chambers, who was banned from athletics for two years for taking illegal drugs, spent a month with Castleford as an unpaid triallist and more than 3,000 fans turned out to watch him play his first game, a reserve friendly against York just over a week ago.

But his hopes of earning a contract have been dashed.

Castleford chief executive Richard Wright said: 'Our coaching team feel that Dwain would need a significant amount of additional time to prove whether he could make the grade in Super League and time is something we don't have.'

But Chambers has also not given up hope of resurrecting his athletics career and said recently: 'No matter what happens with my rugby league adventure I am hoping to get my Olympic ban overturned.'
