Albanian FA chief 'sold' Euro 2008 qualifiers
06 December 2007
Prime Minister Sali Berisha branded the national team a 'mafia group who sell their shirts'.
The accusations came after UEFA declared at the weekend that no Euro 2008 ties featured in their probe into betting irregularities covering 16 matches.
Albania lost 4-2 at home to Belarus and 6-1 away to Romania in their last two qualifiers and Pango called on UEFA to investigate 'clear suspicions that both gamesmighthavebeen sold by the president of our national federation (Armando Duka).
'There is clear evidence he is using our national soccer team's matches for his own interests, insulting the feelings of its fansandsupporters,' Pango added in his letter to UEFA.
The players hit back at Berisha, threatening to sue if an investigation proved they were not to blame.
UEFA, who are probing gangster-driven betting coups involving tens of millions of pounds on 16 games, confirmed they received the letter of complaint but would not comment.
