Allardyce pins his hopes on Owen as Sven hits Toon

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce is pinning his hopes on Michael Owen's fragile fitness to see him through his toughest spell as a manager.

More Newcastle news

The England striker came on as a substitute in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Chelsea and is ready for his first start for almost two months tomorrow night. Owen will face Manchester City and ex-England coach Sven Goran Eriksson, the only man linked with a serious transfer window approach for him.

Slog on the Tyne: Owen is fit to start at last and Allardyce is counting on him

But Allardyce said: "I will be seeing Sven and that will be the first contact I've had with him since we played down there. There has been nothing from Manchester City about Michael Owen."

Owen will be eager to impress new England coach Fabio Capello, but Allardyce's priority is to get him fit and firing for Newcastle. Allardyce said: 'We've had games where we have created a large number of chances and you have to wonder if Michael had been there whether we might have converted a higher proportion."

As Newcastle owner Mike Ashley jetted off for a holiday, chairman Chris Mort dismissed speculation on Allardyce's future as 'tedious'. Allardyce's aim is to raise transfer cash, with striker Shola Ameobi likely to leave for Middlesbrough.
