Almunia success is strictly by the book

Manuel Almunia has revealed a self-help book is helping him cope with the pressure of becoming Arsenal's No1 goalkeeper.

The Spaniard has cemented his place after dislodging veteran Jens Lehmann last season, prompting the German's summer move to Stuttgart.

Just days after a letter was leaked highlighting the beliefs Arsenal's players should adhere to, as suggested by a psychologist employed by the club known as Tim', Almunia claims he is also taking inspiration from another source.

He said: "I'm reading a psychological book about how to think positively. It's called The Secret' by Rhonda Bryne and it's really good.

"It talks about how everything that you want is in your mind and explains that you already have these things.

"The power of the universe, the attraction, gives you everything you need or want. It stresses the importance of always having a positive attitude, saying that this will help you to be successful."

Almunia, who made his 91st appearance for the club in the 4-0 Champions League win against Porto on Tuesday, is relishing the chance to follow in the footsteps of former Arsenal greats David Seaman and Bob Wilson and becoming an Arsenal legend.

"Of course the No1 jersey at Arsenal is very important," he said. "It has been famous for the great goalkeepers in the club's history that have worn it before so it's a big responsibility.

"But at the same time it's a great thing to enjoy for me and I hope that people can be happy with my performances.

"I'm very happy to wear this fantastic number for Arsenal and I'm pleased with how things are going; I'm feeling very well and we have not conceded too many goals, although we always need to improve.

"I think this season I am growing as a goalkeeper and hope I can grown more as the season progresses."
