Alonso: I'll close gap'
The Spaniard, whose second spot at Silverstone reduced Hamilton's lead to 12 points, said: 'Sooner or later I will close the gap.
"Since Canada I have been quite a bit faster than him. At Indianapolis, I couldn't overtake him and at Magny-Cours I had that gearbox problem. Here we had a normal race and I finished more than 30 seconds in front of him.
"There are favourable races coming up now, like Germany and Hungary, and the target is to finish ahead of Hamilton."
The Briton can also see the Ferraris zooming into focus in his rear-view mirrors. Kimi Raikkonen is now 18 points adrift after his second consecutive victory on Sunday.
His team-mate, Felipe Massa, ripped through the field to finish fifth after starting the race from the pits. It was a clear demonstration of Ferrari's ominous advantage on high-speed circuits.
Alonso added: "We can't forget the Ferraris, who have been faster than us again. If Massa hadn't had that problem at the start, he also would have finished ahead of Hamilton.
"I must be on the podium always one step higher than Hamilton. It's good that the championship leader has more difficulties on the track and especially in England after starting on pole."
Meanwhile, Damon Hill, president of Silverstone's owners, the British Racing Drivers' Club, believes the future of the British Grand Prix will be extended beyond the current deal which is due to expire in 2009.
He said: "We can deliver some progress reports before the end of the year. I'm quietly confident."
