Alonso in attack on ‘lucky’ Lewis

Fernando Alonso has branded Lewis Hamilton's sensational maiden Formula One victory at the Canadian Grand Prix as 'very lucky'.

The reigning world champion had a dig at the amazing achievement of his McLaren team-mate, who claimed victory in only the sixth race of his fledgling career.

Different views: Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton

Hamilton's triumph in Montreal leaves the 22-year-old from Hertfordshire eight points clear of Alonso in the title chase heading towards Sunday's US Grand Prix at Indianapolis.

But Alonso has fuelled growing tension within his team by insisting it was only by good fortune that Hamilton did not finish way down the order.

The 25-year-old Spaniard believes luck favoured Hamilton when the first of four safety appearances by the safety car slowed the pack on Sunday.

When the safety car was deployed Hamilton had just made it out of the pits following his first fuel stop. But Alonso, desperately low on fuel, was forced to pit while the safety car was circulating in order to avoid spluttering to a halt on the track.

This was in breach of the rules and Alonso incurred a 10-second stop-go penalty, which saw him drop from third to an eventual seventh place.

"Yes, Lewis's win is very good for the team," he said. "But it was very lucky as well as we were on very similar strategies and if the safety car comes out one lap before Lewis's stop we would have been eighth and ninth."

There was some logic to Alonso's assertion. But it was also true that while Hamilton drove immaculately to take the chequered flag, Alonso's own Grand Prix was tainted by no less than four excursions on to the grass at Turn One.

Amid the euphoria surrounding Hamilton's spectacular success, McLaren chief Ron Dennis must now be concerned that the champion signed at the end of last season to be his star driver is being rattled by a comparative novice.

Hamilton has already expressed his frustration at being told to hold station behind Alonso rather than challenge for a win during the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago.

And Alonso is unlikely to be happy with a remarkable admission made by Pat Symonds, Renault's technical
