Alonso urged to remain at McLaren

Fernando Alonso should stay at McLaren and show Lewis Hamilton who is the better driver, says one of the key men behind Michael Schumacher's success.

Hostilities between the Spaniard and Briton will resume on Sunday when Istanbul hosts the Turkish Grand Prix.

Keeping enemies close: Hamilton and Alonso

And following the controversial Hungarian GP, won by Hamilton after Alonso was demoted from pole position for deliberately delaying his team-mate in the pit lane during the climax to qualifying, there is bound to be tension between them.

Alonso reacted in Hungary after Hamilton ignored team instructions to let the Spaniard overtake earlier in that crucial qualifying session.

Incensed by everything that happened in Budapest, Alonso (right) was then reported to be looking for means to end his three-year contract with McLaren after just one season with the team.

But Willi Weber, who managed Schumacher through a record seven titles won with Benetton and Ferrari, said that would be a mistake.

He said: "If I was Alonso's manager I would not be talking to other teams right now. Changing teams for him would be idiotic. He has the fastest car, what more does he want? The fact Hamilton has done so well should not hurt his pride but instead stimulate him."

In the title chase, Hamilton has a seven-point lead over Alonso, with Ferrari drivers Kimi Raikkonen, of Finland, and Brazilian Felipe Massa a further 13 and 14 points respectively in arrears.

Weber believes Alonso, who competes in his 100th Grand Prix this weekend, must now follow Schumacher's example and concentrate on racing rather than fuelling the feud with Hamilton.

He said: "Of course you always have your different views. But unlike Alonso, Michael always acted correctly. He simply showed who was the better one, and he certainly never thought of leaving the team if he was pushed hard.

"I would have expected Alonso to keep his cool and just smile and shift up another gear. But instead he loses his head and behaves the way he did in Hungary.

"He is making this into a Spanish bullfight, he is doing things without appearing to think about them. I always thought of him as being cool.

"He must now get the McLaren team on-side. He ought to think carefully about what is really important."
