Alves pleads with Seville not to block his switch to Chelsea

Brazil defender Daniel Alves has pleaded with Sevilla not to stand in the way of his dream move to Chelsea. With Arjen Robben edging nearer a £25million switch to Real Madrid, Chelsea are ready to use most of that money to land Alves, a leading figure in the Spanish club's UEFA Cup wins last season and in 2006.

The 24-year- old, speaking at Sevilla's training camp in Marbella, left the club in no doubt his heart is set on a move to Stamford Bridge.

"It is a unique opportunity, a magnificent opportunity to improve and I am not thinking about letting it pass," he said. "I just want to take advantage of what is happening in my life.

"Out of respect, Sevilla have to listen to the offer and weigh it up. My agent has spent a long time on the possibility of me moving to Chelsea. They are interested in me.

"I have behaved well in the last four-and-a-half years and I demand that Sevilla also behave well when it comes to examining an offer."

Sevilla have received a £16m bid from Chelsea, but are holding out for £20m for a player seen by Jose Mourinho as the solution to his problem right back position.

The attack-minded Alves, who scored in Brazil's 3-0 Copa America Final victory over Argentina last month, would also fit in with Mourinho's promise to offer more entertaining football.

Alves added: "I will only leave Sevilla if everyone is a winner because I have a lot of respect for Sevilla and I will keep on doing so because the club have given me everything. But in the future I want the best and a footballer cannot let these opportunities pass."

Alves is keen for the transfer to happen before Sevilla's Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens on Wednesday, which would mean his last game being against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup on Saturday.

He said: "If I play against AEK then I can't play in the Champions League with any other team. You suppose if Chelsea are going to go for me, then they want me to play in this competition. For that reason I hope it is sorted out soon."

With that deadline in mind, Robben is likely to be on his way to Madrid before Chelsea's Premier League opener at home to Birmingham on Sunday.

The Holland winger - who has agreed personal terms with Real - said: "Of course the interest from Madrid makes me happy. But for now I cannot say more because Chelsea will not let me until there is an agreement between the clubs. It's better that they talk about it and solve this.

"I do not know when a deal will be reached. It's in the hands of the two clubs and my father."

Portsmouth are ready to take advantage of Chelsea's reluctance to sell Lassana Diarra to title rivals Arsenal, by launching a bid of their own for the midfielder. The Gunners have had a £5m offer for the France international rejected.

Chelsea teenager Michael Mancienne has signed a new threeyear contract. The centre back is on a season-long loan at Championship side QPR, where he also spent much of the last campaign.
