Murray broke his American opponent in the opening game and despite receiving treatment on his hamstring during the first change‑over, the world No3 broke Roddick again in the seventh game before serving out the set.

In the second set, Roddick dropped his serve twice in succession, to trail 3-0, and then smashed his racket in frustration, receiving a code violation.

After his victory, Murray played down injury fears and said: "Everyone has niggles at this stage of the year and you just need to make sure you aren't doing long‑term damage."
