Paul Jewell has fined walkabout defender Tyrone Mears six weeks¿ wages
Derby manager Paul Jewell has fined walkabout defender Tyrone Mears six weeks’ wages following his controversial move to Marseille.
Mears has received a legal letter from Derby demanding £75,000 after the Championship club claimed he flew to the south of France for a two-day trial without permission, as revealed in Sportsmail last month.
Although the player was dragged back to England by an irate Jewell, he eventually joined Marseille on a year-long loan.
Jewell wanted to sack Mears for gross misconduct during lengthy talks with the PFA in Manchester.
Mick McGuire, the PFA deputy chief executive, said: ‘Derby are entitled to fine him that amount because he is still on a Premier League contract. We don’t know if he will appeal.’
Mears started 25 Premier League matches for Derby last season as they were relegated from the top flight.
