Arabs in race to buy Silverstone

A crucial meeting at Silverstone could result in its owners selling the lease to the track in return for an investment of up to £60million.

The move would secure the future of the British Grand Prix but could involve the selling of naming rights to Silverstone, possibly to a group of investors from the Middle East.

That possibility has angered some members of the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC), which owns the former wartime bomber base. At an extraordinary general meeting of the club they were set to oppose a proposal to give their board greater powers to attract major investment in the track.

Today's meeting has been lent extra importance by the five-week deadline Bernie Ecclestone has set Donington to secure the £80m it needs to stage the British Grand Prix in 2010.

Silverstone, the only alternative host for F1 in Britain, is ready to stage the race but Ecclestone has made it clear that beyond next year the BRDC needs to invest and upgrade heavily.

In a letter to BRDC members, club chairman Robert Brooks has revealed a plan to make the circuit "capable of hosting Grands Prix should the opportunity arise".

His letter adds that "should there be the opportunity to suffix or even prefix the circuit name, which is allowable under any circuit operator's contracts, then further financial reward to the BRDC could be something to consider."
