Arsenal fans plan talks with tycoon

Leading Arsenal supporters are hopeful of meeting with US business tycoon Stan Kroenke to discuss his plans for buying into the club.

The Arsenal Supporters Trust, who are made up of small shareholders, contacted Kroenke's representatives over Easter with a view to establishing a dialogue with the man who spent £65million last Thursday to acquire a 9.99 per cent stake in the club.

The billionaire has indicated that he is willing to meet with members of the AST, although no date has been set at this stage.

Fans are keen to avoid the same scenario that faced Manchester United when Malcolm Glazer's takeover saddled that club with huge debts.

The AST want to prevent a total takeover by unifying at least 10 per cent of the shareholding behind the supporters' banner.

A spokesman said: "We cannot stop someone buying the majority of shares but we can prevent the worst - where an intruder buys all the shares and turns the club into a private money making machine."

Arsenal sources believe it is "highly likely" that the American has also purchased the one per cent stake that was off-loaded by majority shareholder Danny Fiszman last month.

There should be an announcement later this week on the Alternative Plus Market Exchange - which lists Arsenal's shares - disclosing Kroenke's exact stake.

He is obliged to reveal his holding because he now has more than three per cent of the club.
