Arsenal legend accused of racially abusing traffic warden

Ian Wright is to be questioned by police over an allegation that he racially abused an African traffic warden.

The ex-Arsenal and England striker is accused of calling the black warden a "monkey" and telling him to "f*** off back to your own country".

But Wright, 43, dismissed the claim. He said: "He's a liar. He called me a white man who lives in a white man's road. I said to him, 'I'm sure your parents are happy that you've come to England and been a traffic warden instead of a lawyer or something."

Police were called to Wright's home in St John's Wood, northwest London, last month, after the row broke out when he got a ticket for parking on the street without a permit.

Wright's friend, a 38-year-old man, was cautioned at the time for grappling with the warden, 44. The warden then made the allegation against Wright this week.

Ian Wright's friend continues the argument

It is not the first time Wright has had a run-in with a parking attendant.

Two years ago he and his wife Deborah were accused of littering after a warden saw someone throwing a paper cup out of the window of their Bentley.

The couple were about to stand trial, with the warden due to appear as a witness, until a third person came forward and confessed to the offence.

Wright, one of the 100 Great Black Britons, himself was the victim of racism four years ago as he watched his son Chelsea midfielder Shaun Wright-Phillips score a goal for Manchester City at a match against Queen's Park Rangers.

QPR fan Terence Argyle, who was sitting in front of him, turned around and racially abused Wright. He was later charged and convicted.

Wright also accused ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel of racism during a match in 1996. A police inquiry was launched but no evidence was found and the case was dropped.
