Arsenal lose out to Benfica in chase for Di Maria

Arsenal are set to miss out on the signing of exciting Argentinian prospect Angel Di Maria after Benfica agreed a deal for the teenager.

The Portuguese side have reached an agreement in principle with Rosario Central to sign both Di Maria, 19, and 24-year-old Andre Diaz, in a six million euro (£4million) transfer.

Forward Di Maria was part of the Argentina side which clinched the FIFA Under-20 World Championship in Canada last week and is seen as a replacement for Portugal international Simao Sabrosa, who completed his transfer to Atletico Madrid yesterday.

According to the reports, Di Maria is expected to sign a five-year deal. The double capture is subject to the agreement of personal terms and the completion of successful medicals.

The forward claimed last week negotiations with a view to signing for Arsenal were going well.
