Tottenham temptation: Steve Nash wants to get a consortium together to buy Spurs

NBA superstar Steve Nash wants to form a consortium to buy Tottenham if they are put up for sale by current owners ENIC.

The Phoenix Suns guard is a lifelong Spurs supporter and has asked to be informed if Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy decides to sell.

Nash, who is expected to be named the NBA's MVP for the third year in a row at the end of the regular season in April, is a Canadian international but is the son of British parents.

He has earned more than £50million during his career and is close friends with leading professional footballers including Thierry Henry, Steve McManaman and Alessandro del Piero.

“If someone were to come in to buy Spurs, I would like to be involved and partner them,” Nash said.

“Obviously, it would have to make sense for all parties, but, as a fan, it appears to me that Spurs are quite profitable and Premiership football teams are obviously becoming a popular investment for businessmen from all over the world.”

Nash has also recently struck up a friendship with Tottenham's sporting director Damien Comolli and he added: “I met Damien at the World Cup last summer when I was watching England play and we have stayed in touch since.

“In fact, my dad and grandfather are going to be guests of his at White Hart Lane when Spurs play Bolton Wanderers this weekend.”

The 33-year-old, in his third year with the Suns after previously playing for the Dallas Mavericks, returned from the shoulder injury which forced him to miss Sunday's All-Star game in Las Vegas when he helped his side to a 115-90 win over the Los Angeles Clippers last night.

He had 13 points and 12 assists while Shawn Marion scored 31 points in the lopsided win.

"On a personal level, it's nice to just be out there with your team-mates, and as a group, it's a lot of fun to win after three straight losses," said Nash, who missed four games with inflammation in his right shoulder.

"It's maybe good for us that we suffered a little bit, and hopefully we can regroup here."

Marion, who grabbed nine rebounds, was glad to have Nash back orchestrating the show and said: "He came out there, he kept the ball moving and everybody was making their passes. "It was free-flowing and that's how everything happens. That's why we won.

"We were active, everybody was helping each other, we were more stable and didn't have to rotate as much." The New York Knicks have their sights set on the playoffs after registering their 24th win of the season - one more than they achieved in total during their pitiful 2005/06 campaign.

"It's about trying to get as many wins as we can so we can get one of those playoff spots," said Quentin Richardson after the 100-94 victory over the Orlando Magic at Madison Square Garden.

New York are three games behind Orlando and the Miami Heat for the eighth playoff spot and Stephon Marbury, who scored 14 points on his 30th birthday, added: "We're a better team than we were last year. But this is just a win. Last year is last year."

Jamal Crawford and Eddy Curry scored 20 points each and David Lee pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds and added 14 points for the Knicks.

"A lot of things were accomplished here today," Lee said. "We knew it would be a tough game. Both teams were rusty early. We got in a rhythm late and were able to hold them off."

Chauncey Billups scored 19 points and Rasheed Wallace as the Detroit Pistons held off a late rally from the Milwaukee Bucks to win 84-83.

The Pistons are now 16-9 on the road, making them the only team in the Eastern Conference with a winning record away from home.

"We stay poised down the stretch no matter what the score is, no matter who the opponent is," Detroit guard Billups said. "We get what we want." And Wallace added: "It was ugly, I'll take it, though."
