Murray victory takes toll as Nadal bows out

Unseeded David Nalbandian inflicted a 6-1, 6-2 defeat on world No 2 Rafael Nadal in the Madrid Masters yesterday to earn a semi-final against Serb Novak Djokovic.

Nadal still looked to be suffering from the after-effects of Thursday night's 7-6, 6-4 victory over Andy Murray as he surrendered his serve five times and failed to find the range on his ground strokes.

Unseeded David Nalbandian marches on

Nalbandian, runner-up in Madrid in 2004, reached the last four of a tournament for the first time this year at the end of a season in which he has dropped out of the world top 10 to 25th.

Earlier, world No 3 Djokovic powered to a 7-6, 6-2 win over unseeded Croat Mario Ancic.
