Fabio Capello's poor English and the fact that the FA have appointed another foreign coach drew the scorn of FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

"It's important the coach can communicate directly to his players and not through an interpreter," said Blatter. "England had already broken the principle of not hiring from overseas when they had a Swedish coach. But the personality of a coach is also important.

"I don't mind foreign coaches — but if my memory isn't failing me, I have never seen Spain, Italy or Germany hire a foreign coach."

Capello did receive a thumbs-up from Carlo Ancelotti and Marco van Basten.

"He has inherited an England team with extremely high potential," said AC Milan coach Ancelotti.

"Organising that talent and playing a system that can bring the best out of them will be important. I hope Capello does well and I'm sure he can."

Van Basten, who played under Capello at Milan, said: "Johan Cruyff was my best coach but right behind him comes Capello. He has the ability and vision to turn a team into a world-dominating force."
