Ferguson's treble still possible if 2000 Guineas horse comes up trumps

Sir Alex Ferguson could still have a shot at the treble this season — the Champions League, the Premier League and Saturday's 2,000 Guineas.

The Manchester United boss has a share in Classic candidate Fireside, the Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained colt who has been cut to 20-1 by Hills.

Fergie, at Ascot yesterday to watch Distinction finish third to Shipmaster in the Sagaro Stakes, won the 2002 Guineas with Rock Of Gibraltar before falling out with his Coolmore Stud partners.

Among Ferguson's co-owners in Fireside is Pini Zahavi, football's super agent who is closely associated with rivals Chelsea. The syndicate are primarily made up of clients of bookmaker Victor Chandler.

Harry Herbert, who manages Fireside, was encouraged when galloping companion Don't Panic was second to Cesare yesterday.

He said: "Fireside worked well at level weights with Don't Panic at the weekend."

One rival he is unlikely to face is Jupiter Pluvius who Aidan O'Brien rates as doubtful after scoping dirty.

Happier was James Fanshawe as Cesare has been working with his 1,000 Guineas hope Spacious.

Elsewhere Tom Scudamore has lost the ride on horses owned by Thomas Barr, including Champion Hurdle runner-up Osana.
