Swiss fear a Turkish backlash over battle of Istanbul

They may claim to have put the Battle of Istanbul behind them but when co-hosts Switzerland run out to face Turkey in Basle's St Jakob-Park on June 11 the scenes from that disgraceful night in November 2005 will be impossible to ignore.

And with several of the cast from that World Cup play-off likely to participate in the Euro 2008 rematch, Basle is unlikely to have seen anything like it.

Huggel

It's all kicked off: Switzerland's Benjamin Huggel kicks out at a Turkish official after the notorious World Cup play-off in Istanbul

Arsenal's Swiss defender, Philippe Senderos, admitted: "Playing Turkey again will have a symbolic value. You can expect a tough game and the Turks will be looking for revenge."

Many in Turkey are still seething at what they see as the injustice of the punishments meted out by FIFA to their country's FA and players following the violence that erupted at the end of that infamous game.

Although Turkey beat Switzerland that night 4-2 it was the Swiss who went through to the World Cup finals in Germany and for some the disappointment was too much to stomach.

Turkey's coach, Fatih Terim, claimed Swiss striker Alexander Frei started the trouble by making an abusive gesture at him during the play-off first leg, while the visitors complained at being held up for hours at customs when they entered Turkey.

But television footage of the incident begins with Swiss defender Benjamin Huggel aiming a kick at Mehmet Ozdelik, Turkey's assistant coach, before defender Alpay Ozalan wades in and shoves Huggel and Marco Streller.

Swiss midfielder Stephane Grichting was kicked so hard by Alpay that he spent the night in hospital with a perforated urinary canal.

"He was covered in blood and had to go to hospital," said midfielder Johann Lonfat. "We expected an electric atmosphere and for things to be hot, but not like that. They went well beyond the limits of intimidation. I was told, 'We're going to slit your throat'."

Swiss midfielder Raphael Wicky was struck on the head and back but was saved from a worse beating by Turkish twins Hamit and Halil Altintop, who, like Wicky, play their football in Germany and rescued him from their team-mates.

FIFA promised immediate action but the involvement of president Sepp Blatter, who is Swiss, was contentious. The punishments Blatter suggested - suspending the Turkish football federation or even banning the Turks from the 2010 World Cup - inflamed the situation.

After an investigation, FIFA banned Turkey from six home international matches, banned Alpay and Emre Belozoglu for six games and fined them £7,500 each. Another Turkish player, Serkan Balci, was banned for two matches and fined £2,500, while Ozdelik was suspended from football for 12 months and fined £7,500. On the Swiss side, Huggel was banned for six matches and the Swiss physiotherapist,

Stephan Mayer, for two matches. Both teams claim the events of that night are water under the bridge but many of the protagonists will be in Basle for the Group A clash. Swiss coach Kobi Kuhn and Turkey's Terim are still in charge, while Huggel, Frei and Grichting are expected to line up against a Turkish side that will include Newcastle's Emre.

"There will be a lot of talk about playing the Swiss again, but for us it is just another game, another one we really want to win," said Terim. "I want everything to run perfectly - and peacefully."
