Michael Carrick believes moving to Manchester United was the best decision of his career.

The former Tottenham midfielder has managed to secure two Premier League titles, not to mention a European Cup in his short time with the club.

But he is still not assured of a place in Fabio Capello's England side due to the rich pickings in central midfield.

Michael Carrick

Just champion: Michael Carrick is very happy at United

Carrick, though is focussed on United and is already looking forward to the new campaign.

He said: "Being at United is the best place in the world to be. The best thing I ever did was join the club.

"The team we have is moving in the right direction and we are progressing well.

"We want to build on the success we've had over the last couple of years.

"We expect so much of each other and ourselves. What people from outside say doesn't have an effect on us - we know what we can do and what we're capable of doing."

Carrick, however, has yet to catch the eye of Fabio Capello and Sir Alex Ferguson believes the new England boss is spoiled for choice in central midfield.

"I think in the England set-up over the last few years it's correct to say all the managers have had bigger options there than in any other position," said the United boss.

"It's hard to say what the best midfield is. That makes it difficult for the coach.

"Of course, we want our players to be recognised for their abilities at Manchester United but I have no gripes about Michael not being picked.

"It's a difficult choice for Fabio because he has so many options and it's so easy to leave out really outstanding players."

Carrick added: "I just put England to the back of my mind. I'm here to do my best for United. That's what I love doing.

"If I can get in the England squad then that's great but I can only put in my performances for United and see how far that takes me."
