1920: One of England's best-known wicketkeepers, Godfrey Evans, was born. The
Kent gloveman dismissed 269 batsmen in 95 Test matches and was the first to claim 200 Test victims. He died on May 3, 1999.

1948: Lester Piggott won his first horse race aged 12, riding The Chase to victory in the Wigan Lane Selling Handicap at Haydock.

1990: New Zealand's All Blacks suffered their first defeat for nearly four years, losing 21-9 to Australia in Wellington to end a run of 23 consecutive wins.

2000: Blackburn owner Jack Walker died, aged 70. Walker's millions brought the
likes of Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton to Ewood Park, with Rovers winning the
Premier League title under manager Kenny Dalglish in 1995.

2004: England beat Ukraine 3-0 in a friendly international at St James' Park with goals from David Beckham, Michael Owen and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

2006: The Rugby Football Union appointed Rob Andrew elite director of rugby.
